Based on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, UN) special report on Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry shows that any activities on land use and forestry affect carbon stocks and emission of greenhouse gases.
Land use/land cover maps in 2014 shows the land use for each states in Peninsula Malaysia, namely maps include Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Selangor (Kuala Lumpur+Putrajaya) and Terengganu. The land use/land cover class are categorized based on suggested land use and forestry activities by IPCC, which grouped into 7 classes; (i) Cropland, (ii) Forest, (iii) Grassland, (iv) Mangrove, (v) Others, (vi) Settlement (Urban), and (vii) Wetland.
The land use/land cover maps are processed products from the USGS Landsat-7 data. The satellite imageries in tiff format is processed through data stacking process to combine all bands into one image. The satellite imagery was then mosaicked and classified into the 7 major land use classes using imagery software (Erdas and ArcGIS). The classification was based on topographic map as a reference to determine the land use/cover type in the states of Peninsular Malaysia.
